It appears that Matt is going to try to pull a few strings to see if he can get us the access we wanted for the card. In the mean time, we have apparently received copies of the databases to begin working on the coding end of the project. This week I hope that we can get started on it. Carlos suggested dividing up the work at this point, and I think that is probably a good idea to explore. We are going to find out that we all have our strong points and weak points, and we will need to work as a team to complete the project.

We decided to begin working on the homepage of our application. We have also decided to use .net to write our scripts. We finally got access to the tables too. I looked at them and began working re-writing the sql to manipulate the data pulled from the db tables. Things going smoothly.

We made a major break through in our project. Michael received the card scanner hardware/software, and it read our student id card perfectly. There are 3 lines of information on the magnetic strip, and included in that information is the student id that we were hoping to obtain. This will allow us to move forward with the project without further delay. Also, we have decided to use python/html for the interface rather than .net. None of us can program in .net, so rather than learn a new programming language at this stage in the game, we are using a language that 2 of us are familiar with. All is looking very good for this week!

We are once again up against a hurdle. We can not seem to determine a platform by which to build our application. Visual Studio is proving complicated for rookie users like us, and I am concerned that without intervention by Dennis, we may be on the verge of running out of time. We need to select a language / platform that will work with the bookstore server and that is already familiar. This would be the quickest, easiest way to move forward. We tried Python, but some of the necessary libraries / modules were incompatible with the particular server we are working with.

We worked with Dennis on Thursday evening to try to get somewhere with communicating with the USB device. Dennis was a huge help, and we figured out that we needed to use Visual Studio 6.0. I had to leave a little early, and I havent heard how the meeting went after that.

The project is completed from an application standpoint. We just have to complete the Final Report, poster, abstract, etc. The capstone fair is 3 days away and I thi nk we will be ready when it comes up.

Mike is working on using Python to write the application. Currently he has been at the IMU Bookstore downloading some modules so that Python can communicate with MSSQL. More on this as it unfolds.

Mike is still trying to get Python to work with the modules he has downloaded, but is having a hard time. We are all researching different ways to do this, and he is communicating with Rajarshi Gupta, who taught our Python class. May have to change to a different platform soon if no progress is made.

While the guys are on spring break, i have been furiously researching the VSC# language within the .net framework. We reached the determination that we would not be able to use Python as the modules were not robust enough to properly communicate with HID USB hardware. So far, I have found a book on books24/7 that gives a thorough description of C# in VS2008. Lots of reading...

We are working on ironing out the bugs of the application. We are using php for the interface, and VSC# for the program to generate the lists and pull from the DB's. Things going smoothly.

I am conducting user testing. So far, I have received good feedback. I will know more once I have completed all the studies and have analyzed the data.
